My History with English
I've been speaking English since I was three because my first language was originally Tagalog. I watched Sesame Street and The Reading Rainbow cassette tapes (old school) to learn the alphabet and emotions and all those basic things and going into Kindergarten, all we spoke was English and I eventually forgot a lot of Tagalog. Ever since the first grade I liked reading books. I don't really have a favourite book, but a significant book was "The Outsiders" which I read in Ms. Farrant's grade 8 class, and it just had a great story in general, the characters, their personalities, and their problems, kind of hooked me in to their world. I guess I'm one of those readers that would be assigned a few chapters in class, but would want to finish the book in class because I'm that hooked. In grade 9 I had Mr. Manojlovic, and the one thing that stuck out was our Shakespeare unit. We all loved it because of how we all were enthusiastic about it. Despite the fact I was a very shy and anxious guy when it comes to presenting and this class made me more enthusiastic and a better speaker in class presentations. Poetry is something I'm trying to improve in. Sometimes when hanging with friends, they drop a beat and we try to rap freestyle, but i can't freestyle, I need to write a rap in my notes. Some of them talk about serious world problems. Others are just about me and the life that I live. Rapping is something I do when I'm really bored. Meaning it's a rare occasion. That's about all I can think of right now. English to me is kind of fun sometimes. It really depends on what we're doing (I like poetry, hate writing). I'm hoping English this year is enjoyable and I hope I'm successful.

You liked the outsiders really? I found it so boring.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting you originally knew Tagalog!
ReplyDeleteNice job I don't like the Outsiders either
ReplyDeleteOutsiders is amazing one of my favourite books and movies of all time. Dont worry i cant freestyle either.
ReplyDeleteI liked the Outsiders and Shakespeare too but English isn't very fun to me. When it comes to writing it depends what it is. I don't like making up my own stories.
ReplyDeleteI like Shakespeare not the language and I like the outsiders too and your blog was fun to read it even reminded me of other stuff i did in english
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your English is an area of confidence for you know... but I hope you keep your Tagalog. I often wish I could speak to my great grandma and grandparents in their native tongue. We are definitely gonna have to hear some of your songs. I was just listening to a Kid Cudi interview and someone asked him if he keeps licks in his head like Jay-Z (who claims to never write anything down) but he doesn't. He likes to write them down and be in a studio with barely anyone to focus and get the song out. Just saying.
ReplyDeleteim glad you english class you will serve the world good
ReplyDeleteI liked the outsiders too!
ReplyDeleteYay, glad you're getting comfortable with english and rapping, and yeah keep up the tagalog #canasian
ReplyDeleteIts really cool that you were self motivated to watch different educational t.v shows to help improve your English. Its good how you know your weaknesses and strengths so that you are able to grow from your mistakes or successes.
